Porsche 961 and Porsche 956
The only all-wheel-drive Porsche ever to start at Le Mans is development derived from the circuit-race version of the Porsche 959. By entering this car in the race, Porsche aims merely to test the bi-turbo racing car with water-cooled four-valve cylinder heads. Yet René Metge and Claude Ballot-Léna bag a victory in the IMSA-GTX class and place seventh overall despite their starting position number 26.
